Off-Label Medicines
What is Off-Label Prescribing?
Off-Label Prescribing is the practice of using an FDA approved medication for anything other than its approved use, or what is the drug’s official labeling. This is a common and accepted practice. Clinicians have the authority to prescribe FDA-approved drugs based on their clinical judgment and the best interest of their patients. One in five prescriptions are for an off-label use.
Off-label use can provide valuable, cutting-edge treatment options, especially for conditions with limited approved therapies, or approved therapies with low efficacy rates. There are many therapies with tremendous histories of safety, off-label efficacy, and are generic with low-cost to patients. As a clinic, we are interested in more research into the use of off-label therapies for conditions with few viable treatment options
It is considered good practice for a clinician to discuss the rationale, potential benefits, and potential risk with their patient to obtain informed consent. Read more about our informed consent policy
