Diabetes Prevention Program
Diabetes is a disease of disrupted glucose metabolism due to low insulin and/or poor sensitivity to insulin. Long term effects are heart disease, stroke, peripheral vascular disease, glaucoma, and neuropathy. Diabetes affects millions of people with incidence on the rise. It is estimated that 1 in 3 adult Americans have pre-diabetes, which can be present for many years prior to the onset of Diabetes. Unfortunately, the “food guide pyramid” has misguided people into eating too many carbohydrates, and not enough protein and healthy fat leading to insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome.
Our program evaluates patients with a detailed personal and family history, review of symptoms and laboratory tests. An individualized plan is constructed involving lifestyle changes, diet, use of nutraceuticals and medication if needed. Early diagnosis of insulin resistance, pre-diabetes and prevention of diabetes is the goal of this program.
